Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a technique by which pipe, duct or cable can be installed underground without disturbing surface structures and thereby avoiding the disruption caused by traditional open trenching methods. Therefore, in order to carry out underground trenching work in highly congested areas with minimal impact and disturbance to the surrounding areas and commuters, we at ‘Access Engineering Ltd’ procured a ‘Vermeer D24x40 Series II Navigator Horizontal Directional Drilling Machine’ which has the power to install utilities under obstacles such as roads, buildings, railroad tracks, streets, rivers and creeks with little or no impact to the above ground surface. Access Engineering Ltd, being the first ever company to embark on this latest technology, has been providing directional drilling services since 2008.

With the extensive use of this technology we have installed underground ducts in built up areas between Colombo and Matara and in Kadawatha town the Optical Fibre Backbone Network of Dialog Telekom PLC. Within a period of mere one and half years (as at ending March 2010) we have successfully completed installing an approximate length of 20Km of conduit laying for fibre optics with the opportunities available to us and have maintained an average length of installation in the range of 150-200M per day depending on the rocky terrain and soil conditions.

In order to avoid potential damage to landscape and other underground utilities, Access recently introduced the ‘Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)’ system which is equipped with the technology to identify underground obstacles and existing utilities prior to surface penetration.

Fibre Optic Cable installation by Cable Jetting, yet another first in Sri Lanka to be acquired by Access Engineering Ltd. Cable jetting is the process of installing a cable in a duct by pushing the cable into the duct whilst blowing air trough the duct, is made possible with the use of cable jet machine and compressors with moist separators ensuring minimum tension to the cables and enhancing productivity. We have been successful in installing and reaching a distance of approximately 4Km on average per day.
